An uninterruptible power supply (UPS) or uninterruptible power source is known as battery backup that provides emergency power to a load when the input power source or mains power fails.
In the computer system and network application, UPS power supply mainly plays two roles: first, it is used in emergency to prevent the sudden power failure from affecting the normal work and causing damage to the computer; second, it is to eliminate "power pollution" such as surge, instantaneous high voltage, instantaneous low voltage, wire noise and frequency offset, improve the quality of power supply and provide high-quality power for the computer system. Now UPS system has been widely used in computer, communications, banking, securities, communications, medical, industrial control and other industries, and is rapidly entering the family.

The following is an overview of the three main types of UPS：
（1）Backup ups - this is the simplest and lowest cost form of power protection. The load is always powered by the electric supply. If the power is cut off, the power system will switch to the ups and its fully charged battery as the standby power supply. For data center and other mission critical environments, offline UPS is not the most appropriate power protection method.
（2）On line interactive ups - this type is similar to off-line UPS, but adds protection for automatic regulators or AVS. This minimizes the risk of any voltage unpredictability. Online Interactive UPS units are commonly used in telephone exchanges, servers, and small motor applications.
（3）Online ups - also known as online dual conversion ups. In this type of power protection system, the load is not directly connected to the power supply. The power supply enters the ups and through the rectifier, converts the rectifier from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC). The UPS inverter then converts it back to AC and supplies the actual load. Different from the two methods mentioned above, if there is power failure or interference in the online power protection system, the power supply will not be interrupted, even if only a few milliseconds, it will immediately switch to the standby power supply.
